Friendly: Kingstonian

Tuesday 2 August 2011. Pre-Season Friendly.

Walton & Hersham 2 Kingstonian 1.

Swans were good value for their win over Alan Dowson’s side, although the visitors were not at full strength, Chuck Martini also making eight changes for the second-half. Swans soon took the lead in their first home pre-season friendly. With just four minutes gone Russell Pym played Reis Stanislaus into the left of the box, and he sidestepped a defender before neatly finding the bottom, right-corner. Tommy Williams got the ball to Chamal Fenelon on the edge of the box, and he drove in a low shot that K’s goalkeeper Joe White found too hot to hold, but saved at the second attempt.

K’s first threatened after 24 minutes when former Swan Bobby Traynor sent in a dangerous, high cross from close to the byline on the left, and keeper Gareth Williams did well to clear off the head of an incoming forward. Swans’ Phil Williams made a typical run on the right before driving the ball low across goal for it to be deflected behind for a corner. With half an hour played a terrific ball by Tommy Williams sent Stanislaus racing away down the left. K’s keeper White came dashing rashly out of his box, only for Stanislaus to skip past him, before rolling the ball just inches wide of the far-post.

Stanislaus put in another low strike from wide on the left, White going down to push the ball wide. A powerful shot from outside the left of the box by the visitors brought a terrific save from Gareth Williams, the ball then being struck against the right-post as it ran loose. Swans made it 2-0 with five minutes remaining of the half. Stanislaus played the ball inside from the right to Fenelon, whose first shot was blocked, but he regained possession before cutting across the edge of the box and striking a low, left-foot shot into the bottom, right-corner. Graeme Purdy had a chance to make it 3-0 in the second-half, having come on after the break, as he broke clear into the left of the box, but his shot to the near-post was pushed round by K’s substitute keeper Nic Taylor. The visitors pulled a goal back just past the hour when they were awarded a free-kick wide on the left, and substitute Joe Moon’s kick dipped over Gareth Williams before striking the bar.

The ball bounced down and was signaled to have gone over the line by the referee’s assistant. George Griffiths had the best chance to restore Swans’ two goal lead with a quarter of an hour left as he broke clear into the box, but Taylor managed to smother the ball at the feet of last season’s youth team top scorer.
