Walton Casuals 1 Swans 0

Wednesday 9 September 2015.                           Ryman League, Division One South.

Walton Casuals 1   Walton & Hersham 0.  (At Merstham FC).

Swans’ went down to their third defeat on the spin as they played their second Walton derby in just over two weeks at Casuals’ temporary home of Merstham’s Moatside. The only goal of the game from Scott Day, scored with just under twenty minutes remaining of his 100th appearance for Casuals, was enough to see off a visiting side that struggled to create goal chances, Jack Battie’s strike against the post in the dying minutes being their only shot on target.

With Aaron Watson failing to come through a pre-match fitness test and missing his first game of the season, he was sorely missed as Swans lacked any real penetration down the flanks. Although André Scarlett was free to return, both Dominic Ogun and Myles Powponne were sitting out the second matches of their suspensions. Andrew Mensah also returned, while Shaquille McIntosh came in for the injured Watson and C-J. Williams was preferred to Shannon Wallace in defence.

Casuals had an early chance when Luke Medley cut in from the right to drive a shot over from 25 yards.

Swans’ first attempt came when Scarlett set up Harry Mills for a run forward that ended with a low shot from just outside the box that flew wide. With ten minutes played David Koduah got the ball forward to Mensah on the right, and he burst into the right of the box to drive a left-foot shot wide of the near-post. Casuals’ Day had to head the ball over his own bar when Battie took a free-kick from the left, and following the corner taken short by Battie and Mills on the left, the ball was deflected behind for another kick.

At the other end Swans’ goalkeeper Sean Fallon had to block a low shot to his near-post when Medley again got in on the right.

Mills soon went close for Swans as he was found 30 yards out to strike a good low shot just wide of the left post.

Casuals’ quick balls forward out of defence were catching Swans out and Gabriel Odunaike was played through on the left, but he dragged his shot across goal and the ball was cleared.

With a quarter of an hour left to the break Mensah was played down the right for Swans, but after getting into the box he was closed out. Casuals then again had to head the ball behind when Battie sent a free-kick into the box. Following the corner the ball was again played quickly forward to send Odunaike down the middle, but he lobbed the ball over from the edge of the box as Fallon came out. With the first-half coming to an end Odunaike sent in a shot from 25 yards out on the left that Fallon got well behind.

Swans had a scare early in the second-half when James King had to head the ball off the goal-line. But they went close ten minutes in when Scarlett got the ball to Battie twenty yards out, and he turned to drive in a powerful right-foot shot that flew just wide of the right-post.

Swans had to make a substitution when Mensah could not continue and was replaced by Josh Cover.

Midway through the half Casuals’ Medley cut in from the right to bring a save from Fallon with a low shot, but although Swans had looked the better side in the second-half they went behind after 71 minutes. Day met a left-side corner at the near-post to get in a glancing header that found the far, top corner.

As the match entered the final ten minutes Casuals forced two successive corners on the right, and following the second the ball was cleared away from the line. Fallon then had to make a good block as Odunaike was played through.

But with just over five minutes remaining Swans went desperately close to salvaging a draw. Battie was played into the right of the box, and he struck a terrific shot that thumped against the near-post and the ball rebounded clear.
