Godalming Town Match Report

Tuesday 14 September 2010. Ryman League, Division One South.

Walton & Hersham 0 Godalming Town 2.

For the second time in four days Swans were outplayed on their own turf in the first-half, as they were fortunate to be only two goals behind at the break. Despite the return to the home defence of skipper Matt York, the visitors had numerous opportunities to stack up a sizeable half-time lead. Swans however barely created an opening of note throughout the ninety minutes, and there needs to be a quick upturn in form if they are to drag themselves out of the lower reaches of the table. The rain that had started earlier became torrential at kick-off, and after just four minutes York spoilt his comeback by tripping Glenn Stanley just inside the box.

Fortunately for Swans, Stanley drove the spot-kick against the crossbar. It was only a brief reprieve however, as with a quarter of an hour played Dan Morris found yards of space to run into on the right, and as he got to the right corner of the box he lofted the ball superbly over goalkeeper Dean Ruddy to find the far, top corner. Godalming continued to have most of the play, and Shaun Elliott sent a free-kick from outside the right-corner of the box dipping over. Josh Webb then sent in a free-kick from deep on the left, and Ruddy’s attempt to punch clear only sent the ball straight to a visiting player, whose shot was blocked on the line.

Ruddy was soon redeeming himself with a fine save to keep out a shot from the left. With half an hour played however Morris again got clear down the right, and this time he played the ball low across to pick out the unmarked Graeme Purdy, who had the simple task of beating Ruddy. James Mariner went close to making it 3-0 as he drove a shot over. It was inside the last five minutes of the half before Swans put together a decent build-up, but the ball was cleared away. Ray Powell’s cross from the right was then just too high for Adrian Butler at the far-post. Swans made a double change for the second-half, with Frank Wilson and Scott Todd coming on for Butler and Felipe Marques De Lima.

Wilson soon had a chance to pull a goal back when Ryan Lake sent a fine diagonal ball over from the left to pick out Todd on the right, but when he crossed to the far-post Wilson’s control let him down and the chance was lost. Visiting keeper Roberto Gagliardi had barely been troubled, but with just over an hour played he had to dash out of his box on Swans’ right in an attempt to kick clear, but clashed with Powell as the home striker closed him down. Powell was booked for the challenge, but came off worst and had to be replaced by David Baker.

Godalming seemed to have settled for what they had, but Dan Sintim got in a header from Liam Collins’s right-side corner and Ruddy had to stretch high to his right to keep the ball out of the top corner. With a quarter of an hour left Swans had another rare chance when Baker’s cross from the right was just taken of Bernard Asante’s head at the far-post and Wilson followed in to drive a shot over.
